Who would have thought it but just two weeks after Wales and one of the only UK weekly radio shows dedicated exclusively to the Eurovision Song launches Welsh girl Bonnie Tyler lands the job of representing the UK with arguably the strongest UK entry since Jessica Garlic at Tallinn in 2002 (oh, it seems like the Welsh are boasting now). What was no coincidence however was the reaction that we received locally, nationally and internationally from newbies to the Eurovision scene through to old timers (that includes me of course) to Balkan Night that we broadcasted last week ahead of getting stuck right into the new stuff and the 2013 Malmo hopefulls. W12P has so many people to say 'hi' to and thank for their help and support as well as the most important people who are, of course, our new band of listeners - Diolch yn fawr - we would like to extend a special thank you to Oystermouth Radio in the village of Mumbles, here in Wales for giving us the platform with particular thanks to Grant Eden and Michael Kennedy. The Eurovision community is a friendly one and we made lots and lots of friends in our first couple of weeks on air including Jake from SINE FM in Doncaster, who runs a weekly radio show there on Saturday mornings and David Mann who fronts a cracking Blog site called Eurovision Norwich with loads of photos of Eurovision contests he has attended himself, along with his own weekly written updates and the opinions of others on the Blog sites Guestbook and now we learn a weekly podcast so now you can hear the man himself. Finally, we made friends with J.P from Radio International who is a top, top guy running a buzzing outfit over in the Netherlands which goes out live on FM at 8.00p.m CET (7.00 p.m GMT). Radio International is a three hour Eurovision packed experience and you can download the show Podcasts easily from the Radio International Website. J.P conducts interviews with lots of different Eurovision linked celebrities and personalities old and new and is just about the ultimate Eurovision radio experience.
OK, so that's the Week Three review and we look forward to whacking out news on our Week Four show as soon as we get. Next Live Show A Balkan Special Thursday 14 March 2013 20.00 GMT 21.00 CET Well, Week One was a chaotic and exhausting one as W12P launched on Oystermouth Radio last week here in Swansea, South Wales. We learned that while we are Wales only weekly radio show dedicated to the Eurovision Song Contest we are not the only show with the passion in the UK upon discovering Eurovision Domination with Jake at SINE FM. This is actually encouraging as the idea to broaden the Eurovision platform here in the UK is obviously on the up and long may that continue, hopefully with more shows across blighty.
We have made a tremendous amount of friends across the Eurovision community and beyond now both through our Social Media and local interest which was of course fueled by the announcement that Bonnie Tyler, not only Welsh but one of the most high profile residents in the community of Mumbles where we broadcast from, alongside Katherine Zeta Jones, is to represent the UK in Malmo. Week Two's is a short tribute to Ms. Tyler and a bit of fun as we will be playing a musical duel head to head between Bonnie and UK born German entry Natalie Horler of Cascada - should be fun - but will be mainly a Balkan Special. Bonnie Tyler will be featured in our Big 5 Special a little later in the series but we will of course bring all the very latest from the community where Bonnie lives and across the World, as we get it. Bonnie Tyler (photograph last.fm) . . . We don't think so and Wales Douze Points could not be more pleased to learn that today local girl Bonnie Tyler has been selected to represent the United Kingdom at this years Malmo final on 18 May. The same day that W12P live! the audio platform for Wales Douze Points launches at oystermouthradio.com we learn that not only is there a representative that we have faith in but she happens not only to be Welsh but from The Mumbles, where W12P live! is located and broadcasts from. Although born in the Swansea/Neath suburb of Skewen, Bonnie (or Gaynor Jenkins to give the 61 year old singer her birth name) she has lived in The Mumbles for well over thirty years and her home is just a stone throw from our Dunns Lane studio. There is a tremendous amount of excitement from Wales Douze Point Project Manager and broadcaster Joel Bennett (who also shares the same birth day as Bonnie which is 8 June) but from the The Mumbles community, the whole of Wales and particularly the staff at Oystermouth Radio with Welsh Connections broadcaster Mike Kennedy best summing it up, "What fantastic news. 'Believe in me' is a brilliant song and Bonnie is going to take us to the top" ! Bonnie Tyler Representing the UK in Malmo (photograph last.fm) You can follow very closely the progress of Bonnie Tyler here at Wales Douze Points and enjoy the music of Bonnie as well as all the other participants at W12P live! on Oystermouth Radio. 2013 was promising to be a bit of a middle of the road contest this year but now with the introduction of Bonnie as well as Cascada and a few other exciting acts Malmo may well bring a few more surprises. There are still more contestants to be announced and Bonnie will have a lot to do to win the competition against the eagerly awaited selections from Italy, Azerbaijan, Sweden and Israel. The Eurovision enthusiast is going to love W12P live! but those who really love their music and would like to get an in depth taste of music from Wales and the type of music that Bonnie herself has been influenced by, influenced herself and been part of then you may wish to tune in to Mike Kennedy's Welsh Connections Show. www.oystermouthradio.com |
